Wastewater treatment odor control is a constant challenge for wastewater treatment plants. It has been a primary concern for many communities and is a major issue with legislators trying to enact adequate measures to mitigate the problem.
The smell that comes from processing waste originates from the anaerobic bacteria that consume the organic material in the wastewater. A by-product of their consumption is the production of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) which gives it a strong rotten-egg smell. Other contributing molecules include amines, sulfur dioxide, skatoles, indoles and mercaptans.
Ecosorb is a plant-based emulsion designed for wastewater treatment odor control. Its molecules use electrostatic bonding, gas phase solubility and acid base reactions to interact with odor molecules and neutralize them.
There are a few ways Ecosorb can be dispersed in a wastewater treatment system depending on the needs of the facility. Its flexible, cost-effective, and versatile nature is what makes it a more attractive solution for most wastewater treatment managers.
One method of dispersal is through atomization. Ecosorb is diluted in water and dispersed in the form of tiny water droplets from nozzles. The droplets work on contact in the areas where odors are present. One advantage of this process is the level of control that it provides whether it is in a hydraulic high-pressure or pneumatic low-pressure system.
Another method is through vaporization. This process does not use water as a dispersing agent. A vaporizing machine converts the emulsion into dry vapors that are distributed through perforated pipe systems. The advantage of this is that it can be used in many different locations and applications including sub-zero temperatures. It is also more cost effective and eco-friendly.
A third method is by using spray gels. Ecosorb is sprayed on odorous materials preventing the odors from escaping. Situations that require its use include sludge handling and transportation, open-bed waste trucks, working faces of landfills, soil remediation projects and solid and semi-solid materials that continuously emit odors.
Because of the versatile nature of Ecosorb and the different sources of odors in wastewater treatment facilities, knowing the correct method needed for application is important.
Vaporization for instance is optimally used for headworks and primary treatment. Vapor fans can be installed on bar screens and digesters to have maximum effect in wastewater treatment odor control. Biosolids basins are large uncovered areas where odors can permeate so using custom biochemical delivery systems such as spray gels would be suitable for neutralizing odors. Atomization is effective when the nozzles and fans are placed near the unloading point of raw septage haulers and vented or opened downstream to provide effective odor removal.
Wastewater treatment odor control can be costly. It is great news for plant managers that they can now use a low cost, eco-friendly solution that not only saves them money but also improves the quality of life of residents around the community. Ecosorb has been independently tested and verified to be safe to humans and is not damaging to marine wildlife.
